I strongly recommend fully vaccinating kids against preventable diseases on the schedule approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). I do not support nonmedical vaccine exemptions.
A pediatrician has the privilege of not only caring for children during times of illness, but also working with parents to understand and advocate for their child’s needs and overall wellness. Each child possesses their own special characteristics and grows up in a unique set of cultural, environmental, and economic circumstances. I enjoy working with kids and their families from all walks of life and being a part of the joys and challenges of growing up. I believe that pediatrics needs to be a constantly progressing field, and as every generation of children faces new challenges and opportunities, I hope to evolve my practice to incorporate advancements in medical care as well as changes in the way families live and thrive.”
– Alexander Lau, MDAs a college student, Dr. Lau spent one summer creating an unforgettable camp experience for kids and teens at UCLA. Alongside the campers, he learned so much, had a blast, and discovered the joys of working with children (even adolescents!). Some might say that fateful summer camp job was his first step in the direction of pediatrics.
In medical school, Dr. Lau once again found himself enjoying the company of children during his pediatric rotation. In a lightbulb moment, he realized that he empathized with kids at every age and developmental stage, and that empathy helped make him a more effective healthcare provider. He knew then that pediatrics was the specialty for him, and he’s only grown surer of his choice as time goes on.
People often think of pediatricians as only working with children, but they really work with entire families. Through collaboration with parents and caregivers, Dr. Lau builds close relationships with everyone involved in a child’s ongoing care. He really enjoys the team approach of pediatrics and feels honored to be included in the adventures of growing up.
A competitive swimmer in high school, Dr. Lau often returns to the pool to decompress. His other leisure pursuits include jogging, biking around town, cooking, reading a great book while sipping an equally satisfying cup of joe, and discovering new eats.
Dr. Lau has a keen interest in architecture, transportation, and the built environment. He is fascinated with how our neighborhoods and cities are built, the ways we get around town, and their direct influence on our health and quality of life.

They also offer many other services like pediatric sports medicine, in house behavioral health and in house labs. I had to change pediatricians (reluctantly) when my son was around 5. He just turned 8 and I couldn't be happier and now grateful I did have to change."
– Stephanie M."Dr. Lau has been my sons primary dr for two and half years now and my son has severe autism, type 1 diabetes and celiac disease so not an easy patient to have. Dr. Lau is detail orientated, thorough, refers and recommends us out to best specialists in PDX to manage my sons complex health needs, he explains things in verbiage that we are able to understand, he follows through and makes sure we are fully taken care of. His office has special case managers for complex needs children like my son who are easy to reach, answer all our health, medication and referral questions as they arise. Their case manager even attends bimonthly provider meetings representing his medical team. His office is full of providers that we’ve seen when dr Lau was out of the office that never have disappointed us with nothing but professional, knowledgeable and best team of doctors we’ve ever experienced. We came from Kaiser insurance and did not have the same experience at our previous primary care offices. We will never change clinics as we are happy from the front desk agents to the advice nurses and especially Karen Masulis, Nurse Case Manager and Dr Lau who is gentle and kind with my son and my son even requests to see Dr Lau when he’s not feeling well because he finally has a positive experience with his healthcare experience which makes taking him to the doctor so much more manageable and enjoyable. – Kelsey S."When we were expecting our first child, everyone we talked to recommended this office. For almost a year now, we’ve been taking my daughter here and we love Metropolitan Peds! The advice nurses are always quick to call back with any concerns you may have. Sometimes the wait time can be long, but that’s just healthcare these days. We see Dr. Alex Lau, and he does an amazing job with kids! I appreciate how he blends the medical knowledge with practical advice, and isn’t cold or abrupt like some doctors can be. He’s very friendly and personable. My daughter recognizes his voice and smiles as soon as he walks into the room! Everyone from reception to billing to the medical assistants are great. We do have our preferred people, but all in all this office has great staff. When Dr. Alex has been out of the office we’ve seen Dr. Wiley and she’s amazing as well. If I had one critique it’s that I wish there was more flexibility in appointment times. The latest we can see the doctor is 3 PM, and with both mine and my husband’s work schedules, this can be difficult to do sometimes. We make it work, but that said, it would be nice to have extended hours like other offices do."
