Care Philosophy

I feel it’s my duty to change the negative stigma surrounding social work and the term "social service" to let families know that we are here not only to help, but also to create a safe space for them to build the support structure that they need to succeed on their own. I believe this can happen everywhere through exceptional rapport building and high quality of care in the field.”

– Reginald Gilmore II, MSW, CSWA

Biography

One of Reginald’s favorite quotes of all time is by Muhammad Ali, who said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Every day, he does his best to follow this example and return the kindness he and his family have experienced throughout his mother’s care. She has been on dialysis for 25 years, still going strong, and her outcome was always very unknown. Her doctor says that she has already lived the expected lifetime of five dialysis patients combined.

Growing up, Reginald remembers seeing this stranger show up here and there to help his mother obtain the care and resources she needed during her treatments. She would pop up before and after surgeries to make sure his mom felt confident moving forward; she would give her peace of mind in nerve-wracking moments. This woman helped his mother get her medication when they weren’t able to afford it, and for that, Reginald always saw her as a hero. Day after day, he started to believe that she was his mother’s guardian angel. It wasn’t until he was older that he found out that this mysterious person was his mother’s social worker!

This personal connection drew him to the field, and his interest has been captivated since. A few years later, Reginald made things official by obtaining his Master of Social Work from UTC in his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Today, he’s still in love with this field of work.

In his downtime, Reginald loves hiking and adventuring with his partner and their mastiff puppy Melo, going on adventures around beautiful Oregon, or reading indoors on gloomy days.
