Care Philosophy

Growing up with a special needs sibling had its fair share of ups and downs, but the impact of my experience with autism continues to surprise me every day. My brother and I were blessed to have pediatricians who showed my family that my brother was a child full of potential. With the right amount of faith, care, and love, Adrian would one day blow us all away. From that moment on, I believed those words with all of my heart.

Now as a pediatrician myself, I get to combine my medical training with my personal experiences to help children grow and thrive, both physically and mentally. From sick to well, from birth to college, I help families navigate changes in health that challenge us all. I get to teach parents skills they can use at home and teenagers skills they can use throughout their transition to adult care. I love that."

– Antwon Chavis, MD

Biography

From the time he was little, Dr. Chavis’ parents taught him (without knowing – like all parents do!) how to care for both special needs and typically developing children throughout the various stages of childhood and adolescence. Like many parents raising children with different capabilities, his parents instilled in him the importance of patience, the value of every accomplishment, and bringing out the best in others.

With these life experiences and knowledge, Dr. Chavis was able to get involved in his community, putting his skills to good use and discovering his passion for taking care of others in the process. He would eventually enroll in medical school to turn his passion into a career.

As a pediatrician, Dr. Chavis appreciates the variety of people waiting on the other side of the door for him. No two visits or families are alike, and that makes his days interesting and exciting! From helping teens learn to advocate for their own health and well-being to reassuring new parents they’re doing everything right, he seizes every opportunity to inspire good health by giving people confidence in their own abilities. Teaching children and parents skills to create a happier, healthier future is a pediatrician’s greatest legacy.

A music aficionado, Dr. Chavis is rarely seen without his iPod and might (on occasion) ignore his own advice for maximum headphone volume. Listening to music and taking in live shows – bands or theater – are bigtime stress relievers and a large part of his personality. He knows his way around any dance floor, and can often be found busting a move in hip hop classes around Portland. Evenings are spent with his partner, discussing how much their overweight cats hate their new diet and planning their next travel adventure.

Testimonials

"My daughter sees Dr Chavis at the West Side clinic. My daughter is very complex, medically fragile (on a ventilator and oxygen) with a suppressed immune system. They let us go around the back and ring the bell and take us straight into a clean room so she’s not exposed to germs in the waiting area. Dr. Chavis spends time with us, even if it’s on his lunch hour, and never makes me feel rushed. I feel like he truly cares about his patients and I would definitely recommend him. I also want to give a shout out to Amy, their nurse manager. She is amazing at her job and has made the stresses of having a special needs/medically fragile child a little more bearable!"

"My son had his first appointment at Metropolitan Pediatrics, last week. The staff was friendly and helpful and we were seen in a timely manner. Dr. Chavis was very personable, thoughtful, attentive and thorough, while completing my son's exam. He took the time to draw a picture for my son, using colored markers, to help him understand his injury.

After my son's exam, we were in the parking lot, not realizing we had left without the printout for our visit and Dr. Chavis had one of his staff bring us back to the lobby, so he could give us the printout personally and say goodbye. Who does that? What doctor comes out to the lobby to say, "goodbye, nice to see you" and give you your paperwork? Clone him.

Thanks! We'll be back. (Hopefully, not too soon.😉)"
