Supporting Children After Natural Disasters
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the families impacted by the recent storms in Oklahoma. At Metropolitan Pediatrics, we understand that severe weather is distressing not only for those who experience it firsthand, but also for those with loved ones residing in the affected area.
When devastation strikes, it is important to limit children’s exposure to media coverage and disturbing images. While media coverage is intended to provide information, it can often be a source of confusion and anxiety for children. And although your family may not be in harm’s way, images of the destruction and stories about personal losses are upsetting, no matter your age. As a parent, it is important to discuss these frightening occurrences with your children, and help them understand the purpose of media coverage.
