Care Philosophy

I love learning from and growing with new families as they traverse the waters of parenthood. Watching families create new bonds with their children, each other, and the community around them is extremely gratifying.”

Biography

An extrovert by all accounts, Dr. Baliga’s biggest draw to medicine was the opportunity to connect with people. She is, by nature, someone who gains energy and fulfillment by working directly with others. While medicine easily checks that box, Dr. Baliga admits that she walked into medical school without a vision for her future specialty. She had to test the waters to decide.

By day five of her outpatient pediatrics rotation, Dr. Baliga felt the tides shifting. During her first week in the clinic, an unassuming 12-year-old boy softly admitted to her that his mother was physically abusing him, and a 15-year-old girl openly discussed her previously diagnosed eating disorder. Within that first week, Dr. Baliga became deeply moved by these difficult conversations that challenged her to be flexible and adapt her communication style to the needs of her patients.

Once on the inpatient pediatric wards, Dr. Baliga quickly learned that working at a children’s hospital especially necessitated flexible and contextually sensitive communication styles as the hospital is certainly one of the most difficult places for a child and family to be. Dr. Baliga appreciates how pediatric patients’ perception of their health evolves over time as they mature and become insightful young adults. Caring for a child is never straightforward, organized, or predictable, and Dr. Baliga finds a great deal of fulfillment in navigating an environment that constantly challenges her to be creative.

At the end of the day, Dr. Baliga always values the new and memorable connections she makes with her patients, and she empowers them to take care of themselves in an age-appropriate manner. She has a soft spot for teenagers, specifically adolescent girls, and enjoys talking with them about reproductive health, mood, and adolescence.

In her free time, Dr. Baliga is happiest in the company of people. She lives with her partner and dog Reggie, the neediest rescue dog who always tries to run away, but can’t escape their love. She keeps an active social life and can’t imagine living anywhere outside the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Baliga adores the temperate climate here – she loves the ethereal mist of the winters, the dry sun of the summers, and the drizzles of spring. She grew up in America’s Dairyland (Wisconsin), and somehow managed to resist becoming a Cheesehead.
